550 HP and Over 800-Mile Range: This Hardcore 4×4 Could Make You Forget About the Toyota Land Cruiser

Date:

While the premium SUV market seems firmly controlled by Japanese, German, and American brands, a new player is about to shake things up. Its name? M-Hero M817. This hybrid giant measuring 16.7 feet long, designed by Dongfeng’s premium division in China, combines futuristic military design, cutting-edge embedded technologies, and specs that would make the competition pale. All of this backed by an export strategy already launched toward Europe.

Beneath its muscular lines lies an unprecedented plug-in hybrid powertrain, based on a 1.5-liter turbo engine coupled with two electric motors. The result: 550 horsepower, a massive 625 lb-ft of torque, and most importantly, a combined range of over 800 miles, thanks to a 31.7 kWh battery supported by a range extender. This solution allows for 87 miles of pure electric driving while eliminating range anxiety outside urban areas. A rare technical compromise that could appeal well beyond Chinese borders.

The M817 doesn’t just play the performance card. It features an interior worthy of a rolling lounge, with leather upholstery, massage seats, a large Huawei HarmonyOS screen, and state-of-the-art driver assistance. A surprisingly complete proposition, positioned to compete with Toyota Land Cruiser, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Mercedes GLE alike. This raises a simple question: is the market ready to welcome a luxury Chinese hybrid SUV capable of tackling trails and highways alike?

A Colossus from China with Bold Styling

The SUV market continues to expand, but few models can combine luxury, power, and true off-road capabilities. The M-Hero M817, developed by Dongfeng Motor Corporation, fits into this niche of extreme vehicles, halfway between traditional off-roaders and high-end connected vehicles. And at 16.7 feet long and nearly 6.5 feet wide, it doesn’t go unnoticed.

Toyota Urban Cruiser: This Compact Electric SUV Won’t Come to the US, But Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Write It Off Just Yet

The design displays raw power intent: sharp angles, high-mounted hood, imposing ground clearance, muscular wheel arches. But this massive frame is modernized by a sharp lighting signature, glossy black inserts, and sophisticated wheel designs. The inspiration recalls both the Hummer EV and Tank 500, while asserting its own identity focused on electrified performance.

Originally designed for the Chinese market, the M817 now targets Europe, with a strategy based on technical arguments rather than its still-unknown brand image. In a segment dominated by icons, it’s a bold bet.

An Ultra-Muscular Plug-in Hybrid System

Under the hood, there’s no traditional V6 or V8, but an EREV-type plug-in hybrid architecture (extended range electric vehicle), built around a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine serving exclusively to generate electricity. It powers two electric motors (one on each axle), for a combined output of 550 hp and 625 lb-ft of torque.

The battery boasts an impressive capacity of 31.7 kWh, enabling a pure electric range of up to 87 miles, well above current standards for an SUV of this size. And thanks to the range extender, total range climbs to over 800 miles, a rare performance in the PHEV world.

For only $22,769, this turbo Japanese subcompact puts the Skoda Fabia to shame in every way

Performance-wise, the numbers are worthy of a sport SUV: 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds, despite a substantial weight exceeding 5,500 pounds. This compromise between power, range, and usage freedom places the M817 in a class of its own, where charging stations are no longer a constraint.

A Cabin That’s Both Technological and Luxurious

The M-Hero M817 doesn’t settle for impressive specs. The interior reflects premium ambition, with noble materials, careful finishing, and ergonomics inspired by luxury codes. Nappa leather upholstery, contrasting stitching, metallic inserts – it’s all there.

The centerpiece is a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, powered by Huawei’s HarmonyOS. It manages navigation, connectivity, comfort settings, and vehicle technical data. The driver also benefits from a customizable digital cluster and a center console with haptic controls.

Comfort is enhanced by heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and an immersive audio system. All accompanied by a complete ADAS suite: adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, 360° camera, blind spot detection… The M817 has nothing to envy in a Range Rover Sport regarding assistance.

Real 4×4 Capabilities for Off-Road Use

Unlike some modern SUVs that prioritize pavement, the M-Hero M817 claims true off-road capabilities. It’s built on a platform designed to tackle difficult terrain, with permanent all-wheel drive, adjustable ground clearance, and adapted driving modes (snow, sand, mud, rocks…).

The announced wading depth is impressive: 35 inches, placing it among the best in the segment. Adaptive suspension allows height adjustment according to terrain, while steering is calibrated to optimize low-speed control.

It also features an intelligent traction management system, capable of distributing torque between axles as needed. Precious technology for maintaining traction in extreme situations where a simple front-wheel-drive SUV would be immediately overwhelmed.

A Potential Rival for Major Premium SUVs?

With its performance, equipment level, and crossing capabilities, the M-Hero M817 positions itself in direct competition with premium Western SUVs: Toyota Land Cruiser, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, Land Rover Defender P400e, even Mercedes GLE. But its real strength could lie in its pricing positioning, which the brand promises more accessible with equivalent equipment.

By integrating extended-range hybrid technology, distinctive design, and extended range, this Chinese SUV could appeal to customers seeking novelty, tired of traditional manufacturers’ price increases. Questions remain about US market availability, homologation, and especially after-sales network organization.

One thing is certain: the M-Hero M817 doesn’t seek to imitate but to redefine premium off-road SUV codes, betting on intelligent electrification and modern comfort. A strategy that could well find its place in a market seeking technological diversity and more coherent equipment-to-price ratios.
