Neither Land Cruiser nor G-Class: BMW is preparing an off-road monster that promises to revolutionize the 4×4 world forever

Date:

At a time when luxury SUVs dominate sales, few manufacturers dare to return to true off-road territory. Yet BMW has just announced the upcoming arrival of its very first 4×4 designed from the ground up for off-pavement use. A strategic surprise, but also an ambitious shift for a brand that until now mostly associated its xDrive lineup with road models or barely adventurous ones.

The model, expected by 2028 or 2029, will be based on a platform derived from the X5, completely redesigned for off-road capability. It will be produced in the United States, with this market as a priority, and clearly aims to rival the absolute references in the segment such as the Mercedes G-Class, the Land Cruiser, or the Land Rover Defender. It will also help people forget the BMW XM, a luxury SUV whose lukewarm reception is now pushing the brand to reassess its priorities.

This future 4×4 won’t be a simple styling exercise, but a true statement of technical intent. High-performance gasoline engine, xDrive all-wheel drive, advanced electronics, and premium positioning: BMW finally wants to earn its place among off-road legends. And it’s building on a discreet but very real heritage in the off-road vehicle world, as an engine supplier for models like the Ineos Grenadier or the Defender Octa.

BMW changes course and takes on hardcore 4×4s

Long absent from the pure off-road segment, BMW is preparing to make a resounding entry into this booming market. While brands like Mercedes-Benz with the G-Class, Toyota with the new Land Cruiser, or Land Rover with the Defender have historically dominated this category, the Bavarian manufacturer confirms that a true 4×4, distinct from its SUVs, will arrive by 2028 or 2029.

Europe insists on overpriced electric, but the Japanese arrive with a car that gets 62 mpg and an indestructible engine for $230 per month

This strategic shift comes at a time when the global luxury 4×4 market is experiencing a second wind. Far from being limited to the road, today’s high-end clientele demands vehicles capable of going off the beaten path without sacrificing comfort or technology. BMW has understood this evolution and wants to position itself with an unprecedented offer that will be neither an X5, nor an X7, nor a watered-down SUV, but a true off-roader, designed as such from the start.

This new model represents a major break in the German manufacturer’s DNA. After decades of defending “driving pleasure” on asphalt, BMW is preparing a machine to take on nature, capable of directly competing with the segment’s icons while retaining its expertise in luxury and dynamics.

A true off-roader, far from the SUV universe

The promise is clear: this won’t be just another SUV in the BMW galaxy. The future 4×4 will adopt an architecture derived from the X5, but largely modified to meet the specific constraints of off-road driving. This involves optimized approach angles, revised ground clearance, reinforced protection, but above all an intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive system adapted for extreme off-road use.

The “Decathlon” car is the size of a Renault Clio but seats six people thanks to seats inspired by the legendary 2CV

The vehicle will be assembled in the United States, the priority market for this type of product, particularly given the growing demand for premium recreational 4×4s. Unlike road-oriented SUVs, this future model will have to prove its capabilities in real conditions: rock crawling, water crossings, traction on loose terrain… all areas where BMW will have to prove its legitimacy against historical references.

This new model is also a response to the rise of multi-purpose vehicles capable of towing, traveling in comfort, and venturing far from asphalt. It fits into a dynamic where design is no longer just about status, but carries useful functions and concrete performance on all terrains.

An unexpected successor to the BMW XM

Internally, this project also serves as the indirect replacement for the BMW XM, a high-performance and ultra-luxurious SUV launched recently but which hasn’t met expected success. Facing fierce competition (Lamborghini Urus, Aston Martin DBX, Ferrari Purosangue), the XM struggles to seduce, particularly due to its plug-in hybrid positioning that’s disconnected from the expectations of clients in this very specific segment.

BMW is therefore revising its strategy: rather than insisting on ostentatious hyper-luxury, the manufacturer now prefers to offer an authentically functional vehicle capable of appealing to demanding 4×4 enthusiasts without denying the premium codes that define the brand’s DNA. This choice marks a strong strategic transition from the image of raw performance to that of prestigious and adventurous versatility.

BMW’s future 4×4 could thus occupy a new space in the high-end offering, that of a model equally at home in the desert as on the streets of a metropolis. In this regard, it aims to reconcile pure off-road capability with high-end comfort, a territory where Mercedes has long reigned with the G-Class.

A well-proven technical heritage

While this future model is BMW’s first production 4×4 truly designed for off-road capability, the manufacturer isn’t starting from scratch. History shows that BMW has already been an engine supplier for emblematic off-road vehicles. Think of the Bertone Freeclimber in the ’90s, or more recently the INEOS Grenadier, whose gasoline engine is BMW-sourced.

But it’s especially the presence of BMW’s Twin-Turbo V8 in the Land Rover Defender Octa, the ultra-high-performance version of the British off-roader, that demonstrates the brand’s expertise in powerful and robust powertrains. This same engine is even expected in the 2026 Dakar version of the Defender, proof of its ability to withstand extreme environments.

Add to this the technological mastery of xDrive, coupled with increasingly sophisticated onboard electronics, and you get a promising cocktail. The question remains what direction BMW will take on the energy front: pure gasoline engine? Mild hybridization? Partial electrification? To date, the technical direction remains secret, but the objective is clear: build a truly capable luxury 4×4, not just a disguised SUV.
