Neither Tiguan nor Ateca, but $22,000 less: this 160-hp turbo SUV with automatic transmission is a real temptation for families

Date:

The Chinese brand Bestune, little known in America but belonging to industrial giant FAW, is multiplying its offensives on the global market. Its T77, an SUV measuring 15.1 feet long, positions itself against the Peugeot 3008, Renault Austral or SEAT Ateca, but with a knockout argument: a rock-bottom price combined with very generous equipment.

At the end of 2025, the Bestune T77 in Premium trim is offered at $27,930 before rebates. But a commercial offer shakes things up: a $3,300 discount is applied for any purchase with manufacturer financing, bringing the price down to $24,630. A sum closer to a well-equipped Dacia Duster than a classic compact SUV, while offering the size and content worthy of a higher category.

This aggressive positioning is reminiscent of MG Motor’s arrival, or other Chinese manufacturers on the global market. But unlike a 100% electric model, the T77 plays the conventional gasoline engine card, without hybridization, but with a good performance level and standard automatic transmission. A strategic choice targeting customers sensitive to purchase price and driving comfort, without worrying about charging constraints.

Solid specs for daily use

Under the hood, the Bestune T77 packs a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine developing 160 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission. This combination allows it to complete the 0-60 mph sprint in about 9.1 seconds, with a top speed of 118 mph, more than adequate for daily use, highway included.

Average fuel consumption is around 35 mpg, a reasonable figure considering the weight and engine, but which remains higher than hybrid models in the segment. COâ‚‚ emissions are around 161 g/km, but it avoids gas guzzler penalties and remains compliant in most metropolitan areas outside emission zones.

In short, the T77 presents itself as a versatile gasoline vehicle, without technological overkill, but capable of handling urban, suburban and highway trips with a good level of comfort and flexibility. It clearly targets a family or pragmatic clientele, for whom the essential is to have a spacious, automatic, and reliable SUV for daily use.

Generous equipment: quasi-luxury at low-cost pricing?

This is probably where the Bestune T77 hits hardest. In Premium trim, it offers standard very complete equipment that would cost much more from established brands. Features include:

  • A 12.3-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto compatibility
  • Full digital instrumentation
  • Leatherette upholstery, heated seats with electric adjustment
  • A panoramic sunroof, rare at this price point
  • Driver assistance features: adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking
  • Backup camera, rear parking sensors, automatic climate control

The habitability is in the good average of the segment, with decent rear space for two adults, and a generous cargo area around 13-15 cubic feet depending on configurations. So we’re looking at a vehicle suitable for families, with features closer to a mid-range European mainstream vehicle than a low-cost option.

The question of perceived quality remains. Initial feedback indicates decent materials, but falling short compared to European references. Sound insulation, the feel of certain plastics or the calibration of electronic aids could reveal design economies. Details to watch during a dealership test drive.

Credible competitor or Chinese mirage?

Against a Dacia Duster, Hyundai Kona gasoline or well-equipped Renault Captur, the Bestune T77 offers more space, more power and more equipment for a similar price. On this front, the strategy is clear: give a lot for a contained price, establishing itself as a rational alternative, even opportunistic.

But the equation isn’t so simple. The distribution network remains limited in the US, brand awareness is virtually zero, and medium-term resale value uncertain. Moreover, in a market in full energy transition, betting on a non-hybrid gasoline SUV may seem against current trends. This model therefore targets a niche: buyers sensitive to price, space and equipment, but not to brand image or embedded technology.

Ultimately, the Bestune T77 establishes itself as a rational offering in an ultra-competitive segment. It won’t seduce purists, nor those attached to traditional labels, but could well convince pragmatic profiles, concerned with the essentials, without frills. It remains to be seen whether reliability, after-sales service and American public reception will deliver.
