The Perfect Off-Road Sports Car Exists: This Japanese Dream Was Born from the World’s Most Exciting Sports Car

Date:

Perfect roads are becoming increasingly rare. What if, instead of abandoning our sports cars, we prepared them to venture off-road? That’s the bold gamble attempted by Kuhl Racing with this Toyota GR86 Outroad, an off-road version of the Japanese rear-wheel-drive beloved by purists. A crazy idea, but very seriously developed, that pushes the concept of driving pleasure further — even far from asphalt.

The Japanese tuner has decided to adapt the GR86 for track and adventure, equipping it with raised suspension, specific body protection, and a ready-to-install kit. With this conversion, the small coupe becomes a true all-terrain toy, in the spirit of the Porsche 911 Dakar or Lamborghini Sterrato, but at a much more accessible price. And unlike those, this GR86 “Outroad” could very well be driven daily.

Presented as a customization base, this off-road version remains entirely configurable: ride height, turbo, reinforced brakes, or specific wheels. The result? A car that blurs the boundaries between track, road, and trail, while keeping the naturally aspirated 232-hp engine. It will be officially unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026, but some kit elements are already available for order in Japan.

A Japanese Sports Car Transformed into an Adventurer

Kuhl Racing, a Japanese tuner recognized for projects as spectacular as they are functional, tackles unexpected terrain: that of all-terrain adventure. And to do this, it doesn’t choose an SUV, but the Toyota GR86, the lightweight rear-wheel-drive coupe par excellence. The result is called the GR86 Outroad, and it’s not an inaccessible concept. This transformation kit will indeed be offered for sale.

The idea is simple: adapt a lightweight sports car for use off the beaten path, without losing its dynamic DNA. For this, Kuhl has thoroughly revised the ground clearance, protection, wheels, and geometry, while leaving the mechanical base intact. No all-wheel drive or extreme transformation: the GR86 Outroad remains rear-wheel drive, but prepared for adventure.

This unique positioning echoes much more elitist projects like the Porsche 911 Dakar or the Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato, two raised sports cars with stratospheric prices. With the GR86 Outroad, Kuhl offers a credible and accessible alternative, starting from a model sold for around $38,500 base price.

Raised Suspension and Specific Protection

The main evolution of the GR86 Outroad concerns the ground clearance, increased by approximately 3 inches thanks to specific coilover systems. Optionally, a hydraulic system allows gaining another 1.6 inches to clear larger obstacles. The result gives the GR86 a unique silhouette, perched high on its wheels, ready to absorb irregularities.

On the styling side, the kit adds fender flares, redesigned bumpers, aluminum underbody protection, reinforced wheels, and even roof bars for adventure equipment. Auxiliary lights, all-terrain tires, and aesthetic details evoking rally-raid complete the package.

Despite these transformations, the car remains street legal and perfectly usable daily. Kuhl bets on a double life: sports car during the week, adventurer on weekends. The complete kit is announced at the equivalent of $26,600 with installation included in Japan.

Preserved but Prepared Mechanics

The naturally aspirated 2.4L, 232-hp engine remains at the heart of the project. No forced induction as standard, but Kuhl offers an optional Trust turbo kit, accompanied by reinforced cooling, a new oil pan, and modified tuning. This package would bring power beyond 280 hp, while ensuring reliability suitable for demanding driving.

The transmission remains manual or automatic depending on the original GR86 versions. The objective isn’t to create a pure off-roader, but to open new uses for a car designed for the road. For purists, Kuhl leaves the choice: aesthetics only, or complete performance.

Braking, suspension, and chassis elements can also be reinforced. Modularity is at the heart of the project: each customer can adapt their GR86 Outroad according to their needs and budget, from simple visual transformation to a true rally beast.

A New Niche Between Track and Off-Road

The GR86 Outroad doesn’t seek to compete with SUVs or traditional 4x4s. It offers an alternative vision of the fun car, capable of absorbing trails, degraded roads, or forest escapades, while remaining compact, light, and connected to the road. A rare, even unique proposition in this segment.

Its positioning recalls the spirit of the old Subaru Impreza WRX from the 1990s, capable of performance on road and dirt alike. At a time when sports vehicles are becoming increasingly sophisticated, hybrid, or inaccessible, the GR86 Outroad returns to assumed mechanical simplicity, with a touch of aesthetic audacity.
