The large electric SUV market has long been dominated by European and American heavyweights: BMW iX, Mercedes EQS SUV, Tesla Model X. But a new wave from China could well shake things up. Among them, the Leapmotor D19, recently unveiled, positions itself as an ultra-technological flagship, combining electric propulsion, range extender and XXL design. A surprising cocktail, at a price that could make premium brands tremble.
Leapmotor is not yet a household name in the US. However, the manufacturer recently joined the Stellantis group via a joint venture, which opens the door to arrival in the American market by 2026. The D19 would thus be one of the most ambitious models to be offered for export, with specifications worthy of the highest-end segments… but at Chinese pricing.
Equipped with EREV (series hybrid) architecture, this giant runs on electricity and recharges its batteries via a combustion engine, to offer a combined announced range of over 800 miles. A promise that, if confirmed in real conditions, would upset the current balance between pure electric, plug-in hybrid and long-distance combustion.

A 17-foot SUV to compete with premium references
The Leapmotor D19 impresses from the spec sheet. With a length of 17.3 feet and a wheelbase of 10.3 feet, it positions itself in the same category as the largest SUVs on the market. The objective is clear: offer maximum comfort to passengers, whether in 5, 6 or 7-seat configuration. High-end versions should offer two individual rear seats, business class style.
Its style is massive, with a taut and refined line, flush door handles, and an LED light signature that runs across the entire front face. The design is resolutely modern, in the spirit of the latest BYD or NIO models, with a touch of Chinese minimalism.
The oversized format doesn’t just flatter the eye: it allows two different battery packs depending on versions and ensures top-tier habitability. The trunk promises generous volume, even in 7-seat version, making it a true long-distance family SUV, far from a simple electrified urban crossover.

EREV: the D19’s secret weapon to go 800 miles without recharging
Unlike most electric SUVs sold in America, the Leapmotor D19 comes in EREV version, meaning range-extended hybrid. Concretely, the car runs 100% electric thanks to a 400 kW (≈ 536 hp) motor and an 80.3 kWh battery, but also has a small combustion engine that doesn’t drive the wheels: it serves only to recharge the battery while driving.
Result: up to 310 miles of real electric range, then over 500 additional miles thanks to the thermal range extender, for a total announced range of 800+ miles according to Chinese CLTC cycle. Even accounting for a 20-25% gap in EPA cycle, this would remain impressive compared to the 350-450 miles of the best electrics on the market.
The D19 is also compatible with ultra-fast charging thanks to its 800-volt architecture (1000V in EV version), which would allow recovery of 30 to 80% battery in 15 to 20 minutes, according to manufacturer data. A compelling dual approach for those who want to drive electric without suffering the anxiety of the unfindable charger.

An ultra-technological interior powered by dual Snapdragon
Inside, Leapmotor aims for perfection. The D19 features a latest-generation digital cockpit, powered by two Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 processors, which manage both the user interface and advanced driver assistance functions.
The driver enjoys a digital instrument cluster, a large floating central screen, and, in higher versions, a 60-inch AR heads-up display projected on the windshield. Integrated LiDAR sensors on the roof enable Level 2+ semi-autonomous driving functions, with announced evolution toward Level 3.
The interior ambiance is premium, with quality materials, impressive rear seat space and advanced comfort functions: ventilated seats, quad-zone climate control, ambient lighting, even an integrated oxygen generator for highly polluted markets. A true rolling lounge, without compromise.

Leapmotor x Stellantis: coming to America soon?
The Stellantis group officially announced in 2023 a strategic partnership with Leapmotor, including exclusive distribution rights in North America. This deal provides that models like the D19 will be marketed in the US starting in 2026, with a distribution network integrated into the Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram dealership network.
Price-wise, the Leapmotor D19 is announced in China at about 300,000 yuan, equivalent to $43,000 before taxes. Even accounting for import fees, taxes and European regulatory adaptations, the final price would likely remain under $60,000, or $22,000 to $33,000 less than equivalent American competitors.
A pricing position that could appeal to customers ready to trust a new player if the after-sales network and warranty are solid. And if Stellantis manages to ensure this aspect, the D19 could become the largest electric SUV in the American market at this price point.
