1985 Volkswagen GTI With Callaway Turbo and BBS Body Kit Heads to No-Reserve Auction

Date:

A 1985 Volkswagen GTI fitted with a period Callaway turbo conversion and BBS body kit is heading toward the end of a no-reserve Bring a Trailer auction. Located in North Carolina, the modified Mk2 hatchback combines 1980s performance tuning with a documented maintenance history and approximately 35,000 miles on its odometer.

The Mars Red GTI is offered by the Tons Of Gas Auto Collection in Charlotte, North Carolina. According to the Bring a Trailer listing, bidding is scheduled to close on October 14, 2026, at 10:58 a.m. Pacific. The auction displayed a $16,000 bid when checked, although that figure is not a final sale price.

What makes this particular GTI interesting is its combination of period aftermarket hardware and surviving documentation. Rather than a modern engine swap, it retains its original-style 1.8-liter four-cylinder layout, enhanced by a Callaway turbocharger, with the power delivered through a five-speed manual transmission.

Callaway Turbo Power From Volkswagen’s 1.8-Liter Four-Cylinder

During the 1980s, Callaway developed turbocharging conversions for cars that were originally naturally aspirated. This GTI is an example of that approach, using forced induction to extract considerably more performance from Volkswagen’s compact hatchback.

According to Sport Auto’s October 12 report, the conversion produces approximately 150 hp and 160 lb-ft of torque, with boost pressure around 10 psi. Those are reported period-conversion figures, not independently verified dynamometer results for the auction vehicle.

The reported mechanical modifications include a cylinder-head spacer intended to reduce compression and an intercooler supplied with air through a distinctive hood scoop. Sport Auto identifies the scoop design as originating from the Nissan 300ZX Turbo.

The French publication also cites period performance figures of approximately 7.2 seconds from 0 to 62 mph and a top speed near 122 mph. These figures provide historical context rather than a guarantee of what this particular car can achieve today.

Power reaches the front wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. The auction listing also confirms a custom exhaust system featuring a resonator and Dynomax muffler.

BBS Styling and Suspension Complete the 1980s Conversion

The exterior modifications are nearly as distinctive as the turbocharged engine. A BBS body kit changes the appearance of the Mk2 GTI, while three-piece 15-inch BBS RS wheels with Toyo tires reinforce its period-tuned character.

Bring a Trailer notes that the wheels have been redrilled, an important detail for anyone evaluating the car’s modifications. The suspension uses coilovers, and braking is handled by power-assisted discs at all four corners.

The body was repainted in Mars Red in 2026, according to the seller. Other exterior features include a sunroof, flush headlights, red accent stripes and a rear window wiper.

Inside, the GTI retains patterned cloth sport seats and its original-style instrument cluster. A Lecarra steering wheel and BBS-branded shift knob accompany the modifications, while a Callaway VDO boost gauge occupies the location normally reserved for the factory stereo. The listing states that the aftermarket stereo is inoperative.

Maintenance Records Matter More Than the Low Odometer Reading

The seller purchased the Volkswagen in 2018 and reports adding only approximately 200 miles since then. The odometer displays about 35,000 miles, and the Montana title carries an actual-mileage notation.

Although the indicated mileage is relatively low, the maintenance history deserves particular attention. Records described in the auction listing document extensive work in January 2019, including timing-belt and water-pump service, ignition components, cooling-system parts and a battery.

Additional fuel-system components were replaced in March 2024. In July 2026, work following a fuel leak included replacement of the fuel distributor, injectors and fuel-pump intake. The brake fluid was also flushed that month.

The listing includes a Callaway Turbo certificate and accompanying records. Its Carfax report shows no reported accidents or other damage, although at least one open recall is noted. These documents provide useful information for prospective buyers, but they do not replace an independent inspection of a four-decade-old modified car.

No Reserve, With Previous Callaway GTI Sales Providing Context

The auction is being conducted without a reserve price, meaning there is no undisclosed minimum bid that must be reached for the car to sell. The final amount will depend on bidding before the scheduled October 14 close, including any extensions triggered by last-minute bids.

Sport Auto cites previous sales of comparable Callaway-equipped 1985 GTIs at approximately $21,100 in 2015 and $37,000 in a later transaction. Those results illustrate the range of prices reported for similar conversions, but differences in condition, originality and documentation prevent them from establishing a definitive value for this example.

For prospective bidders, the most relevant details are the documented Callaway conversion, the BBS equipment, the 2026 repaint and the recent fuel-system work. The car is offered with a Montana title from Charlotte, North Carolina, and its final selling price remains undetermined.
