A Real 4×4 for Everyone: Renault’s Bold Bet
In a market dominated by SUVs with rugged looks but often lacking real off-road capabilities, Renault is taking the opposite approach. By reviving a project for a compact, electric, and affordable 4×4, the French manufacturer intends to respond to real demand: that of a simple, versatile, and reliable vehicle for daily trips as well as off-pavement escapades.
The future Renault 4 4×4 targets all those who dream of a real all-terrain vehicle without wanting to invest the $66,000 needed for a Jeep Wrangler or Toyota Land Cruiser. Its approach aims to be more democratic, in the direct line of what the original Renault 4 was: a work vehicle, utilitarian, capable of tackling rough paths without flinching, while remaining economical.
This project comes at the perfect time, as several brands — from Suzuki to Jeep with its Avenger 4xe — are testing all-wheel-drive solutions with electric assistance. Renault intends to go further, with a 100% electric version but designed from the start to leave the city and face winter or rural conditions.
The Savane 4×4 Prototype: Between Heritage and Modernity
The presentation of the Renault 4 Savane 4×4 concept made an impression. Under its neo-retro design directly inspired by the legendary 4L, this prototype hides a very real ambition: to offer a modern and pragmatic alternative to urban all-electric vehicles. And unlike other demonstrators with no follow-up, this model is well on track to arrive on European roads.
Savane 4×4 doesn’t just seduce with style. It claims an assumed off-road vocation, relying on a specific architecture, raised suspension, mixed tires, and traction management electronics designed for slippery terrain. The idea is clear: make the future Renault 4 a car as comfortable in the city as on a snowy climb.
It’s also a return to roots in Renault’s philosophy: creating accessible, useful vehicles capable of adapting to varied environments. A spirit that the manufacturer had somewhat abandoned in recent years, focused on urban and classic electric segments.
A Simple, Effective, and 100% Electric Technical Formula
On the technical side, Renault has opted for the AmpR Small platform, already used by the future electric R5 and R4. The system’s heart relies on dual motors: a front electric unit producing 201 hp, powered by a 52 kWh battery, and a second electric motor positioned at the rear, exclusively dedicated to all-wheel drive.
This solution allows for genuine electric all-wheel drive without resorting to complex drive shafts, while preserving the original architecture. The system therefore remains light, compact, and more economical to produce. Mechanical simplicity that guarantees robustness and reduced maintenance costs, two essential criteria for the target audience.
Launch Expected Before 2027 at Under $33,000
According to initial internal estimates, the Renault 4 4×4 launch price should remain below the symbolic $33,000 mark, before federal tax credits. An ambitious but realistic price positioning, thanks to a shared platform and industrialized development on Renault ElectriCity production lines in northern France.
The model would primarily target Northern European markets, where demand for electric vehicles adapted to harsh climates is strong. But France, with its rural areas and harsh winters in certain regions, also represents ideal terrain for this type of SUV with utilitarian and family vocation.
Commercial launch is expected before 2027, potentially even late 2026 if industrial timelines are met. Facing multiplying competition in the electric B-SUV segment, Renault is banking on a unique DNA: that of an accessible, robust, and ingenious vehicle, capable of bridging the gap between iconic past and electric future.
