A 1985 Volkswagen GTI equipped with a period Callaway turbo conversion and an extensive BBS body kit is back in the spotlight. The Mars Red Mk2 hatchback is being offered without reserve on Bring a Trailer, with bidding scheduled to close October 14, 2026.
Located in Charlotte, North Carolina, the modified GTI combines a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, five-speed manual transmission and distinctive 1980s aftermarket styling. Its odometer shows approximately 35,000 miles, and the sale includes a Callaway Turbo certificate.
More interesting than the appearance alone is the car’s documented ownership and maintenance history. According to the original Bring a Trailer listing, the seller acquired it in 2018, has driven it approximately 200 miles since then and completed several mechanical repairs. The listing also identifies some issues prospective buyers should examine before bidding.
Callaway Turbo Power Gives the Mk2 GTI a Different Character
The centerpiece is Volkswagen’s 1.8-liter inline-four, modified with a period Callaway turbocharger conversion. Callaway’s involvement gives this GTI a connection to the American aftermarket performance scene of the 1980s, when turbocharging offered an alternative to replacing an engine with a larger one.
According to French automotive publication Sport Auto, the conversion uses a cylinder-head spacer to reduce compression, a turbocharger operating at approximately 10 psi and an intercooler supplied with air through a hood scoop. The publication reports output of around 150 horsepower in its original metric specification and approximately 160 lb-ft of torque.
Those figures describe the reported conversion rather than a verified contemporary dynamometer result for this particular car. Bring a Trailer confirms the Callaway installation but does not provide a current horsepower measurement.
The front wheels receive power through a five-speed manual transaxle. A custom exhaust with a resonator and Dynomax muffler completes the drivetrain modifications.
Sport Auto also cites period performance testing indicating acceleration from zero to 62 mph in approximately 7.2 seconds and a top speed near 122 mph. These historical figures should not be interpreted as independently verified performance numbers for the auction vehicle today.
BBS Styling and Period-Correct Modifications Define the Exterior
The three-door GTI wears a BBS body kit with revised bumpers, side skirts and fender extensions. Its three-piece, 15-inch BBS RS wheels have been redrilled and are fitted with Toyo tires. Coilover suspension and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes round out the chassis equipment.
The car was repainted in Mars Red in 2026, according to the seller. Exterior details include a sunroof, flush headlights, red accent stripes and a hood scoop serving the intercooler.
Inside, patterned cloth sport seats preserve the familiar Mk2 GTI appearance, while a Lecarra steering wheel and BBS-branded shift knob reflect the aftermarket modifications. A Callaway VDO boost gauge occupies the original stereo location, accompanied by a hard-wired radar detector.
Air conditioning is fitted, although the seller reports that the aftermarket stereo is inoperative. The combination of original Volkswagen components and period tuning accessories is central to this car’s identity.
Recent Mechanical Work Matters More Than the Low Mileage Alone
The odometer shows approximately 35,000 miles, with the Montana title carrying an actual-mileage notation. The seller reports adding only around 200 miles since purchasing the GTI in 2018.
Maintenance records described in the auction listing include a substantial service in January 2019 covering the timing belt, water pump, ignition components, cooling-system parts and other items. Fuel-system components were replaced in March 2024.
In July 2026, additional fuel-system work followed a fuel leak. Repairs included replacement of the fuel distributor, injectors and fuel-pump intake, along with fresh spark plugs and engine oil. The brake fluid was also flushed that month.
For prospective buyers, the documented fuel leak and subsequent repairs deserve particular attention. A pre-purchase inspection would also help establish the present condition of the turbo system, suspension and other modified components, especially given the limited mileage accumulated under current ownership.
The Carfax report is described as free of reported accidents or other damage, although at least one open recall is noted. The sale includes maintenance documentation and the Callaway certificate.
No-Reserve Auction Ends October 14
The GTI is part of the Tons Of Gas Auto Collection and is listed as Bring a Trailer lot number 268333. Bidding is scheduled to end Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 10:58 a.m. Pacific time, subject to the platform’s automatic extensions for last-minute bids.
At the time the listing was checked, the displayed bid stood at $16,575, with 17 bids recorded. That figure is not a final sale price, and the no-reserve format means there is no undisclosed minimum price that must be reached for the vehicle to sell.
For historical context, Sport Auto reports that other Callaway-modified 1985 GTIs have sold for approximately $21,100 and $37,000 in previous auctions. Those transactions provide reference points, not a valuation of this particular example, whose condition, documentation and modifications may differ.
The seller is offering the car with a Montana title and a Callaway certificate. With its combination of documented period modifications, recent servicing and a no-reserve auction, this GTI gives American collectors an opportunity to evaluate a distinctive chapter of 1980s Volkswagen tuning history.
