2026 GMC Sierra 1500: Confirmed Engines, Towing Capacity, Pricing, and the Upcoming Redesign

Date:

The 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 continues to offer turbocharged gasoline, V8, and diesel powertrains, with maximum available towing capacity of 13,300 pounds. But buyers considering GMC’s full-size pickup now face another decision: whether to choose the current truck or wait for the redesigned 2027 model.

The 2026 Sierra 1500 remains available in the United States with multiple cab configurations, work-oriented models, luxury-focused Denali versions, and specialized off-road trims. Its established mechanical lineup provides several options for drivers prioritizing towing, everyday transportation, or interior comfort.

Although some online descriptions portray the 2026 Sierra as an entirely new truck, GMC’s official announcements establish an important distinction. The company unveiled the next-generation 2027 Sierra 1500 on June 25, 2026, and released detailed specifications on September 22. That redesign, rather than the 2026 model, introduces new V8 engines, substantially revised interiors, and expanded technology.

Four Engine Options Cover Different Truck-Buying Needs

The 2026 Sierra 1500 offers a choice of gasoline and diesel engines, depending on trim and configuration. GMC’s official 2026 configurator confirms that the TurboMax engine produces 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. This turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The available 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 produces 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque and uses a 10-speed automatic transmission. Buyers seeking diesel power can choose the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six, rated at 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque, also paired with a 10-speed automatic.

A 6.2-liter gasoline V8 is also part of the 2026 Sierra 1500 powertrain family, although availability varies by trim. These engines give buyers different combinations of torque delivery, power, and fuel consumption rather than a single universal specification.

One particularly relevant distinction concerns the transmissions: the 2026 TurboMax uses an eight-speed automatic, while GMC has confirmed a 10-speed automatic across the redesigned 2027 Sierra’s engine lineup.

Maximum Towing Reaches 13,300 Pounds

GMC lists maximum available towing capacity for the 2026 Sierra 1500 at 13,300 pounds when properly equipped with the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel. The manufacturer also specifies a maximum available payload of 1,880 pounds for the diesel-powered Sierra 1500.

Those figures should not be interpreted as capabilities shared by every version. Cab style, drivetrain, equipment, and towing configuration affect the limits of an individual truck. Buyers planning to pull a travel trailer or equipment trailer should check the specific vehicle’s ratings rather than relying exclusively on the model’s advertised maximum.

The diesel’s 495 lb-ft of torque makes it a particularly relevant option for shoppers comparing powertrains for towing. GMC also offers towing-oriented transmission functions, including Tow/Haul mode and grade braking, depending on configuration.

Official diesel specifications are available on GMC’s Duramax information page.

Interior Technology and Trim Choices

The 2026 Sierra 1500 spans a broad range of equipment levels. The Pro trim emphasizes essential truck functions, while SLE and Elevation add more convenience and infotainment equipment. GMC’s configurator identifies a 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen with Google built-in on SLE and Elevation models.

Higher trims, including Denali and Denali Ultimate, target buyers seeking a more premium cabin. GMC also offers AT4 and AT4X versions for customers interested in specialized off-road equipment.

Equipment varies substantially across the lineup, so features such as upgraded displays, advanced driver assistance, and premium interior appointments should not be assumed standard on every Sierra 1500.

2026 Pricing and the Redesigned 2027 Sierra

GMC’s online configurator lists a 2026 Sierra 1500 Pro Regular Cab with a standard bed starting at $41,095. A Pro Double Cab with a standard bed and rear-wheel drive starts at $44,395. Pricing varies with body style, drivetrain, powertrain, and optional equipment, while taxes and dealer charges can affect the final transaction price.

The bigger development is the next-generation Sierra 1500. GMC’s September 22 announcement confirms new 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V8 engines, revised interiors, and broader availability of Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance.

For the 2027 Sierra 1500, GMC lists a starting MSRP of $51,295 for a four-wheel-drive Pro Crew Cab, including a $2,795 destination charge. That price is not directly comparable with the less expensive 2026 Regular Cab configurations.

The first redesigned 2027 Sierra 1500 trucks are expected to reach dealerships before the end of 2026. Buyers considering the outgoing model therefore have a concrete choice between the established 2026 powertrain and equipment combinations and the newer truck’s updated engines, cabin, and technology.
