2027 BYD Atto 8 Debuts in Europe With Seven Seats, 764 HP and Nine-Minute Flash Charging

Date:

BYD unveiled the Atto 8 at the 2026 Paris Motor Show on October 12, introducing its first European-market BYD model with Flash Charging technology. The seven-seat electric SUV combines a 115-kWh battery with charging times as short as nine minutes and up to 764 hp.

Known as the Tang L in China, the Atto 8 will become BYD’s flagship electric SUV in Europe when sales begin in the first quarter of 2027. Buyers will have a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with different performance and driving-range figures. Pricing has not been announced, and BYD has confirmed no US launch.

The most significant development is not the SUV’s considerable power output, but the combination of a large battery and exceptionally short charging times. According to BYD’s official October 12 announcement, the Atto 8 introduces its second-generation Blade Battery and Flash Charging technology to the company’s European SUV lineup.

Flash Charging Promises a 10% to 97% Recharge in Nine Minutes

Both Atto 8 versions use a 115-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery. BYD claims the battery can charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes, or from 10% to 97% in nine minutes when using its Flash Charging technology.

The company also claims unusually strong cold-weather charging performance. At temperatures as low as minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit, BYD says the battery can charge from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes.

These are manufacturer-reported figures, not independently verified charging-test results. They also depend on access to compatible high-power charging infrastructure rather than ordinary public DC fast chargers.

That infrastructure is a crucial part of BYD’s European strategy. The manufacturer plans to install 3,000 Flash Charging stations across Europe by the end of 2027. Until that network becomes widely available, the Atto 8’s headline charging capability will not necessarily translate into similarly short stops on every journey.

There is also an important distinction concerning the technology’s European debut. BYD previously announced Flash Charging for the Denza Z9GT, a vehicle sold under its premium Denza brand. The Atto 8 is therefore the first European-market model wearing the BYD badge to feature the system, rather than the first vehicle from the entire BYD group.

Two Powertrains, With Up to 764 HP and 405 Miles of WLTP Range

The Atto 8 will launch in two electric configurations, both equipped with the same battery capacity.

  • Design RWD: A single rear electric motor produces 340 kW, approximately 456 hp. BYD quotes a 0-to-62-mph time of 8.0 seconds and up to 405 miles of combined WLTP range.
  • Excellence AWD: A second motor drives the front wheels, increasing combined output to 570 kW, approximately 764 hp, and 572 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph takes a claimed 4.6 seconds, with up to 374 miles of WLTP range.

The distinction matters: the 405-mile figure belongs to the rear-wheel-drive version, not the 764-hp all-wheel-drive model. Both figures use Europe’s WLTP testing procedure and should not be interpreted as EPA-certified estimates.

BYD’s figures also illustrate the trade-off between performance and efficiency. The more powerful all-wheel-drive version sacrifices 31 miles of rated WLTP range despite retaining the same battery capacity.

A Three-Row SUV With Practical Cargo Space

At approximately 198.4 inches long, 78.6 inches wide and 69.3 inches tall, the Atto 8 is firmly in the large SUV category. Its European configuration provides seven seats across three rows.

According to BYD, the rear cargo compartment holds approximately 9.5 cubic feet with all seats occupied. Folding the second and third rows expands that figure to about 69.2 cubic feet. A separate 4.8-cubic-foot front trunk adds storage space without taking up room behind the third row.

The cabin includes a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 26-inch head-up display. Google built-in services are included, while the front seats and outer second-row seats offer heating, ventilation and massage functions.

These features position the Atto 8 as a family-oriented flagship rather than simply a high-performance electric SUV.

European Sales Start in 2027, but US Availability Remains Unconfirmed

BYD has confirmed that European dealerships will begin selling the Atto 8 during the first quarter of 2027. The manufacturer has not published European pricing or announced a corresponding American model.

The Atto 8’s significance for US readers is therefore primarily technological. Its charging claims show how BYD is attempting to reduce one of the practical disadvantages of large electric SUVs: the time required to replenish a substantial battery during long-distance travel.

Whether those figures become useful in everyday driving will depend on the availability of compatible chargers and the performance of production vehicles under real-world conditions. For now, the confirmed launch is European, and the nine-minute recharge remains a manufacturer claim.
