BYD has unveiled the Atto 8 at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, introducing its first European-market vehicle equipped with Flash Charging technology. The seven-seat electric SUV combines a 115-kWh battery with charging from 10% to 97% in a claimed nine minutes and up to 764 hp in its most powerful configuration.
Presented on October 12 by BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li, the Atto 8 is the European version of the Tang L sold in China. It will sit at the top of BYD’s European SUV lineup, with sales scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. No US launch has been announced.
The headline specification is not simply the SUV’s power output or driving range. The Atto 8 brings BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and ultra-fast charging technology to European customers, supported by a planned network of dedicated charging stations. The important distinction is that its impressive charging figures are manufacturer claims tied to the company’s Flash Charging technology, rather than independently verified results at ordinary public chargers.
Flash Charging Promises 10% to 97% in Nine Minutes
The Atto 8 uses a 115-kWh second-generation Blade Battery based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. According to BYD’s official European announcement, the battery supports three particularly notable charging figures:
- 10% to 70%: Five minutes.
- 10% to 97%: Nine minutes.
- 20% to 97% at -22°F: Twelve minutes under BYD’s stated conditions.
The cold-weather figure is especially interesting because low temperatures normally reduce the charging performance of lithium-ion batteries. However, the cold-weather test begins at a different state of charge, so it should not be interpreted as a directly comparable three-minute penalty under identical conditions.
BYD also plans to install 3,000 Flash Charging stations across Europe by the end of 2027. That is a deployment target, not an existing network. Access to compatible infrastructure will therefore be central to whether owners can regularly achieve the advertised charging times.
For perspective, charging from 10% to 97% represents 87% of the battery’s stated capacity. The combination of a large battery and a nine-minute charging window illustrates why this technology requires substantially more demanding charging infrastructure than conventional fast charging. BYD has not established that these times will be available at every public DC charging station.
Rear-Wheel Drive Offers More Range Than the 764-HP AWD Model
European customers will have two confirmed electric powertrain configurations. The Design RWD uses a single rear-mounted motor rated at 340 kW, approximately 456 hp, while the Excellence AWD adds a front motor for a combined 570 kW, approximately 764 hp.
The all-wheel-drive version develops 572 lb-ft of torque and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in a manufacturer-claimed 4.6 seconds. BYD also quotes a top speed of approximately 149 mph.
Both versions use the same 115-kWh battery, but their certified European driving ranges differ. The rear-wheel-drive model achieves up to 405 miles on the WLTP combined cycle, while the more powerful Excellence AWD is rated at approximately 374 miles WLTP.
These figures are not EPA estimates and should not be treated as directly comparable to the range ratings published for US-market electric SUVs. The range difference also means the maximum 405-mile figure does not apply to the 764-hp version.
A Three-Row SUV With a 4.8-Cubic-Foot Front Trunk
At approximately 198.4 inches long, 78.6 inches wide and 69.3 inches tall, the Atto 8 is a substantial family SUV. Its European configuration provides seven seats arranged across three rows in a 2+3+2 layout.
With every seat occupied, the rear cargo compartment holds approximately 9.5 cubic feet. Folding the second and third rows expands the available volume to roughly 69.2 cubic feet, according to BYD’s published European measurements.
A separate 136-liter front trunk provides another 4.8 cubic feet of storage. CarNewsChina’s report also describes a double-tap opening function for the front compartment and a projection-activated power tailgate.
Inside, BYD specifies heated, ventilated and massaging seats for the front occupants and outer second-row passengers. Equipment includes a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a 26-inch head-up display.
European Sales Begin in Early 2027, but Pricing Remains Unconfirmed
BYD plans to introduce the Atto 8 through European dealerships during the first quarter of 2027. Official European pricing has not yet been announced.
The related Tang L is already sold in China, where CarNewsChina reports prices between 222,800 and 272,800 yuan. Those domestic prices cannot be used to predict European retail pricing because market positioning, equipment, taxes and import costs differ.
The Atto 8 also represents a significant change from the Chinese-market Tang L’s five-seat configuration, adding a third row for European buyers.
For American readers, the Atto 8 is primarily a preview of BYD’s latest battery and charging capabilities rather than an upcoming domestic showroom model. Its European launch will provide an opportunity to assess how the company’s nine-minute charging claims translate into everyday use as dedicated Flash Charging infrastructure becomes available.
