Google Maps has introduced a McLaren Formula 1-inspired vehicle icon that replaces the familiar blue navigation arrow with a miniature orange race car. The free customization is reportedly available for a limited time, with November 23, 2026, identified as its expiration date.
Drivers using Google Maps can already choose from several vehicle avatars, but the latest addition brings a recognizable racing design to everyday navigation. Inspired by the McLaren MCL40, the new three-dimensional icon follows the driver’s position along the selected route without changing how the navigation system works.
According to a report published by Sport Auto on October 12, 2026, the feature began appearing in early October as part of the relationship between Google and the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team. Its temporary availability makes it worth checking the app before the promotion ends.
Google Maps Gets a Miniature McLaren MCL40
The new avatar takes its visual inspiration from McLaren’s 2026 Formula 1 car, the MCL40. It features the team’s distinctive papaya-orange color scheme, a pointed nose, wide bodywork, and prominent racing tires.
Unlike the standard blue arrow, which primarily indicates position and direction, the McLaren icon gives the navigation display the appearance of a tiny race car traveling along the road. The three-dimensional design is intended to remain recognizable without obscuring the route.
The styling also reflects the existing relationship between Google and McLaren. Google-related branding, including Android and Chrome, appears on the actual racing car, making the digital avatar an extension of an established partnership rather than an unrelated novelty.
The change is entirely visual. The McLaren icon does not introduce a different navigation mode, alter route calculations, or provide any driving-performance features. It simply replaces the on-screen representation of the vehicle while Google Maps continues providing directions.
How to Activate the McLaren Icon on Android and iPhone
The reported activation process is straightforward, although the exact menu names can vary depending on the Google Maps version and operating system.
- Open Google Maps on an Android phone or iPhone.
- Tap your profile picture and open Settings.
- Look for the vehicle customization or driving avatar settings.
- Browse the available vehicle icons and select the orange McLaren race car if it appears.
- Start navigation to display the selected avatar on your route.
There is also a potentially faster method. Start a navigation session, then tap the blue arrow or vehicle icon representing your position. Google Maps can display a selection of available avatars along the bottom of the screen, allowing you to choose a different vehicle directly.
Sport Auto reports that the McLaren avatar can also appear through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay when a compatible vehicle uses Google Maps navigation. That means the customization is not necessarily limited to the smartphone display.
However, availability may depend on Google’s rollout. If the McLaren does not appear among the available icons, it does not necessarily mean the phone or vehicle is incompatible. The feature may not yet have been enabled for that account or app installation.
The McLaren Avatar Is Reportedly Available Until November 23
The most significant limitation is the promotion’s reported expiration date. According to Sport Auto, the vehicle selection interface identifies November 23, 2026, as the end of the McLaren avatar’s availability.
The date falls immediately after the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend, linking the temporary customization to a period of heightened attention around Formula 1 in the Americas.
What happens to previously selected avatars after November 23 remains uncertain. The French publication reports that Google has not explained precisely how the feature will behave after the deadline. The McLaren could disappear from the selection menu, but whether existing selections will remain active has not been established.
There is also no indication in the report that users must pay to activate the icon. The customization is described as free, without additional advertising or any meaningful change to battery or mobile-data consumption.
For drivers interested in trying it, the practical distinction is simple: this is a temporary appearance option within an existing navigation app, not a new Google Maps product or a permanent vehicle setting. Its reported November deadline makes availability the main consideration for anyone who wants the McLaren on their dashboard.
