1985 Volkswagen GTI With Callaway Turbo and BBS Body Kit Heads to No-Reserve Auction

Date:

A 1985 Volkswagen GTI equipped with a period Callaway turbo conversion and a full BBS body kit is heading toward the end of a no-reserve Bring a Trailer auction. Located in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Mars Red Mk2 combines 1980s aftermarket performance hardware with a documented service history and approximately 35,000 miles on its odometer.

The car is listed as part of the Tons Of Gas Auto Collection, with bidding scheduled to close on October 14, 2026, at 10:58 a.m. Pacific Time. Unlike a conventional restored GTI, this example retains the kind of turbocharged modifications that made specialist Volkswagen tuning particularly interesting during the 1980s.

According to the original Bring a Trailer listing, the seller acquired the hatchback in 2018 and has driven it approximately 200 miles since. The auction includes a Callaway Turbo certificate, maintenance records and a Montana title. The listing provides considerably more detail about the car’s documented condition than about its actual performance output.

A Callaway Turbo Conversion Gives the Mk2 GTI a Different Character

Under the hood sits Volkswagen’s 1.8-liter inline-four, modified with a period Callaway turbocharger conversion. Power reaches the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission, while a custom exhaust system incorporates a resonator and Dynomax muffler.

The original French-language report from Sport Auto describes the conversion as producing approximately 150 metric horsepower, equivalent to about 148 mechanical hp, and 160 lb-ft of torque. It also references approximately 10 psi of boost and an intercooler supplied with outside air through a hood scoop.

Those figures provide historical context rather than a verified dynamometer result for the auction car. Bring a Trailer confirms the Callaway installation but does not publish a measured horsepower or torque figure for this particular example.

The distinction matters because the car’s appeal rests partly on its period modifications. Its turbo conversion represents a substantially different approach from simply preserving a factory-specification GTI, while the included Callaway certificate provides supporting documentation for the installation.

BBS Bodywork and Period Accessories Define the Exterior

The GTI wears a complete BBS body kit, including revised bumpers, side skirts and wheel-arch extensions. Three-piece 15-inch BBS RS wheels, fitted with Toyo tires, reinforce the unmistakably 1980s appearance.

The seller reports that the body was repainted in Mars Red in 2026. Other exterior details include a sunroof, flush headlights, red accent stripes and a hood scoop serving the intercooler.

Underneath, the car has adjustable coilover suspension and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes. The BBS wheels have been redrilled, a detail worth examining alongside the wheel fitment and associated hardware during a pre-purchase inspection.

Inside, the GTI retains patterned cloth sport seats and its original-style analog instrument cluster. A Lecarra steering wheel and BBS-branded shift knob accompany the aftermarket modifications. A Callaway VDO boost gauge occupies the original stereo location, alongside a hard-wired radar detector.

The seller also identifies a functional shortcoming: the aftermarket stereo is inoperative. Air conditioning is listed among the equipment, although the auction description does not establish its current operating performance.

Recent Mechanical Work Is Documented, but Mileage Is Limited

The seller’s maintenance history is particularly relevant for a modified car of this age. In January 2019, work included replacement of the timing belt, water pump, ignition components, thermostat, battery and several associated service items.

Additional fuel-system repairs followed in March 2024, including replacement of the in-tank fuel pump, accumulator and pump housing. In July 2026, a fuel leak prompted further servicing, including replacement of the fuel distributor, injectors and fuel-pump intake. The brake fluid was also changed that month.

Bring a Trailer reports approximately 35,000 miles shown, with only about 200 added under the current owner’s eight-year ownership. That limited use makes the service records especially important, but does not independently establish the car’s mechanical condition.

The accompanying Carfax report contains no reported accidents or other damage, although at least one open recall is noted. The title carries an actual-mileage notation.

What Buyers Should Know Before the October 14 Auction

The Volkswagen is being offered without a reserve price, meaning the seller has not established a minimum acceptable winning bid. The auction is scheduled to end Wednesday, October 14, at 10:58 a.m. Pacific Time, subject to Bring a Trailer’s automatic extensions for late bids.

At the time the listing was checked, the displayed bid was $16,575. That is an interim figure, not a final sale price, and bidding may change before the auction closes.

Sport Auto references earlier Callaway-equipped GTI auction results of approximately $21,100 in 2015 and $37,000 for another example. Those historical figures illustrate the range of reported transactions but should not be treated as a valuation of this particular vehicle without comparing condition, originality and documentation.

For prospective buyers, the strongest documented selling points are the Callaway certificate, recognizable BBS equipment, extensive recent servicing and relatively low indicated mileage. The 2026 repaint, modified wheels, limited recent driving and outstanding recall also deserve attention before bidding.

The car’s location in North Carolina makes this a directly accessible U.S. collector-car auction rather than an overseas listing requiring import arrangements. The final price will establish what bidders are prepared to pay for this particular combination of period turbocharging, aftermarket styling and documented maintenance.
