1985 Volkswagen GTI With Callaway Turbo and BBS Body Kit Heads to No-Reserve Auction in the US

Date:

A 1985 Volkswagen GTI equipped with a period Callaway turbo conversion and a complete BBS body kit is heading toward the end of a no-reserve Bring a Trailer auction on October 14, 2026. Offered in North Carolina, the modified Mk2 hatchback combines 1980s aftermarket performance hardware with approximately 35,000 miles showing on its odometer.

Finished in Mars Red and riding on three-piece BBS wheels, this GTI represents a distinctive chapter in American Volkswagen tuning history. Its 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine received a Callaway turbo conversion, transforming the character of Volkswagen’s front-wheel-drive hot hatch.

The car is being offered by the Tons Of Gas Auto Collection in Charlotte, North Carolina. According to the original Bring a Trailer listing, it comes with a Callaway certificate, maintenance records and a Montana title. With no reserve price, the highest qualifying bid will determine the sale price.

A Callaway Turbo Conversion Gives This 1985 GTI Extra Power

The most significant modification is beneath the hood. Rather than relying on the original naturally aspirated configuration, this GTI uses a period Callaway turbocharger conversion applied to Volkswagen’s 1.8-liter inline-four.

French automotive publication Sport Auto reports that the conversion incorporates a cylinder-head spacer to reduce compression, approximately 10 psi of boost and an intercooler supplied with outside air through a hood scoop. The article estimates output at approximately 150 hp and 160 lb-ft of torque.

Those figures describe the reported conversion rather than a verified dynamometer measurement for the specific auction car. Bring a Trailer confirms the Callaway hardware but does not provide an independently measured horsepower figure.

The original five-speed manual transaxle layout remains, sending power to the front wheels. A custom exhaust system featuring a resonator and Dynomax muffler complements the turbocharged engine.

Sport Auto also references historical performance testing suggesting a 0-62 mph time of approximately 7.2 seconds and a top speed near 122 mph. These are period performance figures, not results from a contemporary test of the vehicle currently for sale.

BBS Bodywork and Period Modifications Define the Exterior

The GTI’s appearance is almost as distinctive as its mechanical configuration. A BBS body kit changes the hatchback’s profile, while 15-inch three-piece BBS RS wheels provide an unmistakably period-correct aftermarket look.

The wheels have been redrilled and are fitted with Toyo tires, according to the auction listing. Coilover suspension replaces the original setup, while power-assisted disc brakes at all four corners provide stopping power.

Other exterior details include flush headlights, red accent stripes, a sunroof and a prominent hood scoop associated with the intercooler installation.

The seller states that the car received a repaint in Mars Red during 2026. That distinction matters to collectors: although the color reflects the GTI’s original-era appearance, the visible finish is not surviving factory paint.

Inside, patterned cloth sport seats, an analog instrument cluster and a Lecarra steering wheel preserve much of the 1980s atmosphere. A Callaway VDO boost gauge occupies the space normally used by the factory stereo. The listing also identifies a hard-wired radar detector and notes that the aftermarket stereo is inoperative.

Recent Mechanical Work Matters More Than the Low Odometer Reading

The six-digit odometer shows approximately 35,000 miles. The seller acquired the car in 2018 and reports adding only about 200 miles during ownership.

That limited use makes the documented maintenance history especially relevant. The auction description identifies several rounds of mechanical attention:

  • January 2019: Timing-belt service, water-pump replacement, ignition components, cooling-system parts and other routine maintenance.
  • March 2024: Replacement of fuel-system components including the in-tank fuel pump, accumulator and pump housing.
  • July 2026: Additional fuel-system repairs following a fuel leak, including a replacement fuel distributor, injectors and fuel-pump intake.
  • July 2026: Brake-fluid service, along with an engine oil change documented during the same period.

The accompanying Carfax report shows no reported accidents or other damage, although at least one open recall is identified. The title carries an actual-mileage notation.

For a buyer considering a four-decade-old turbocharged Volkswagen, the records provide useful information about work already performed. They do not eliminate the need to inspect the turbo installation, fuel system, suspension and other aging components.

No-Reserve Auction Ends October 14

The GTI is listed as Bring a Trailer Lot #268333, with bidding scheduled to close on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 10:58 a.m. Pacific Time, subject to the platform’s automatic extensions for late bids.

At the time the listing was checked, the displayed bid stood at $16,575, with 17 bids recorded. That amount is provisional, not a final sale price.

Sport Auto cites previous sales of comparable Callaway-modified GTIs at approximately $21,100 and $37,000. Those historical transactions offer context, but differences in condition, specification and documentation make them imperfect comparisons.

The seller includes a Callaway certificate and supporting records, giving prospective buyers an opportunity to examine the car’s modification history. The combination of period turbocharging equipment, BBS styling and documented recent maintenance makes this particular GTI more specialized than an ordinary restored Mk2.

With no reserve and the auction closing October 14, the final bid will establish what collectors are prepared to pay for this example of 1980s American Volkswagen tuning.
